Waahida Tolbert-Mbatha – Co-Founder and Head of School
Waahida is the co-founder and head of school at Kgololo Academy in Alexandra Township, South Africa. Prior to establishing Kgololo Academy, Waahida worked for seven years as a middle school humanities teacher and as an after-school program coordinator, most recently at E.L. Haynes Public Charter School in Washington, DC. Waahida holds a Master’s of Science in Education Policy and Community Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where she was an Advanced Opportunity Fellow and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Berea College in Education. Waahida also completed the Global School Leadership Fellowship with KIPP in 2013.
Waahida enjoys reading, listening to live music, political satire and spending time with her son, current Kgololo Academy scholar, Themba and hanging out with her husband Thulani.
Busisiwe Matsheke – Grade 2 Teaching Assistant
Busisiwe is originally from Virginia, Free State. She matriculated at Mamello Secondary school in the year 2012. In the year 2016, Busi completed a Diploma in Human Resource Management and in 2016 she decided to further her studies by enrolling for a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education with the Central University of Technology.Busi enjoys working at Kgololo Academy because she is truly passionate about kids and wants to make a difference in their lives. In her spare time, Busi enjoys reading books about South African Law and Human Rights. Busisiwe believes that you can achieve anything you want to achieve if you put your mind to it!
Joyce Mokgethwa – Student Support Associate
Joyce was born in the community of Alexandra and attended school at Alexandra High School in the year 2005. Joyce enjoys spending time with her family and has a three year old child who will be coming to Kgololo Academy in the year 2019. Joyce likes seeing progress in everything she does. Joyce enjoys working at Kgololo Academy as she loves being surrounded by kids and listening to all the fascinating stories which they like to share with her.
Kefilwe April – Grade 2 Lead Teacher
Kefilwe is a Lead Second Grade Teacher at Kgololo Academy Prior to teaching second grade, Kefilwe taught Grade R for 3 months and first grade for a year. Kefilwe obtained a General BA Degree within Humanities from University of Johannesburg. In 2017, Kefilwe will be participating in an Inclusive Education course which will provide her with the tools to better serve her scholars.
Kefilwe enjoys listening to music, dancing, watching movies, going out shopping and spending time with her friends.
Lerato Machaba – Grade R Lead Teacher
Lerato was born and bred in Midrand Countryview, she matriculated in the year 2009 at Midrand High. Lerato studied child and youth care work through an internship sponsored by NACOSA and she looks forward to adding two more years to study social work. Lerato enjoys reading books, watching motivational clips and listening and reading poetry.
Lerato enjoys working at Kgololo Academy as it helps her grow each day and she also enjoys working with children and being a mentor and leader in young children’s journey. Lerato looks forward to being a role model to her scholars as education is the key to knowledge and success.
Marvellous Ncube – Student Support Associate
Marvellous is the Student Support Associate at Kgololo Academy and prepares the meals for the scholars and staff. During her spare time Marvellous enjoys relaxing and going out with her husband to restaurants. Marvellous enjoys working at Kgololo Academy as she has learnt how to interact with scholars and has become a better cook.
Matilda Matshidiso Aphane – School Counsellor
Matilda was born in North-West of Pretoria and matriculated at Herman-Thebe High school in Rustenburg. Tilly then furthered her studies at the University of Western Cape where she attained her first degree in Social Science majoring in Psychology, Sociology and Anthropology. In 1998 Matilda completed her Undergraduate Degree in social sciences at the University of Western Cape. In 2012 Matilda decided to study Practical Play Therapy for both adults and children with the Private Clinical Psychologists. Matilda enjoys working at Kgololo Academy as she gets to see the scholars develop and change each time she meets with them. She also enjoys working at Kgololo Academy as she gets an opportunity to practice her expertise and spend her time doing what she is strongly passionate about.
Mpho Sijo – Grade R Teaching Assistant
Mpho grew up in Alexandra Township and matriculated from Northview High School in the year 2016. Mpho looks forward in enrolling with Unisa in the coming year to study towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Mpho enjoys working at Kgololo Academy because the staff engage the scholars and treat both scholars and staff with great respect. Mpho has a brother by the name of Ntsako who is in Grade 1 at Kgololo Academy in the Charlotte Maxeke class. Mpho’s favourite quote is “Stars can’t shine without darkness”.
Nelisiwe Mhlongo – Grade 1 Lead Teacher and Grade Level Chair
Nelisiwe is a Grade 1 Lead Teacher and the Grade Level Chair at Kgololo Academy. Nelisiwe holds a Diploma in Education from the Innovatus FET College. She grew up in Mpumalanga and loves going home to visit very often. In 2017, Nelisiwe was accepted into the highly selective Instructional Leadership Programme which will prepare her for future leadership roles at Kgololo Academy.
Nelisiwe enjoys reading, teaching (she could teach all day), singing, preaching, and spending time with her daughter Dumolwenkosi and watching movies with her partner Ashley. Dumolwenkosi is currently in grade 2 Kgololo Academy scholar.
Nelisiwe enjoys working at Kgololo Academy because she is given the opportunity to grow as a teacher and as a person.
Nothando Mhlongo – Creative Arts Teaching Fellow
Nothando Mhlongo is an intern at Kgololo Academy. Nothando studied Fashion Design at Tshwane South College. In her spare time, Nothando enjoys listening to music, watching movies, drawing, and sewing.
Nothando has two nieces in the school named Dumolwenkosi and Kwanele; Dumolwenkosi is in the Thuli Madonsela class and Kwanele is in the Hugh Masekela class. She enjoys working with kids and loves working at Kgololo Academy because she she gets the opportunity to learn new things.
Ofentse Mokobodi – Human Resource Manager
Ofentse Mokobodi is the Human Resource Manager at Kgololo Academy and is currently studying towards a Bcom Industrial Psychology Degree at the University of South Africa. Ofentse enjoys spending time with her family during her spare time and she also enjoys watching movies and keeping herself updated with current affairs.
Ofentse has a niece in the Hugh Masekele class named Khethiwe and a nephew in the Charlotte Maxeke class named Karabo. She enjoys working at Kgololo Academy as she is constantly given the opportunity to grow and touch the lives of the scholars living in Alexandra (where she was born and bred).
Pamela Gijima – Administrative Assistant
Pamela is from Zimbabwe Midlands province, and attended Mambo High school where she matriculated in 2008. Pamela is currently studying Early Childhood Development with Bopadichaba and will be graduating in November. She enjoys crafting and art and also enjoys doing research on topics that touch her heart such as education, crafts and art. Pamela enjoys working at Kgololo Academy because she gets the opportunity to grow each day and the fact that the school caters for the needs of each and every learner. Pamela strongly believes that you can become anything you want if you keep going and never give up.
Robyn Brown – Intern
Robyn was born and bred in the community of Bosmont based in the Western Suburbs of Johannesburg. She matriculated at Horskoel Vorentoe in the year 2015 and furthered her studies at Sparrow in the year 2017 where she studied Early Childhood Development. Robyn joined the team in July and she will be interning with Kgololo Academy until the end of the year.. Robyn enjoys working with children and helping them reach their dreams through empowering them with knowledge. She strongly believes that each child should be valued and treated with utmost respect and that education should empower a child and help him/her make a positive contribution to the world.
Sharon Mabhena – Student Support Associate
Sharon Mabhena is the Student Support Associate at Kgololo Academy and helps prepare Kgololo Academy’s delicious meals and ensures that the scholars and the Kgololo Academy staff are well nourished. Sharon enjoys going out to restaurants, catching up with her friends and shopping for her kids. She enjoys working at Kgololo Academy as she has been given the opportunity to learn things that she did not know prior to working at Kgololo Academy and she also got to the opportunity to improve her vocabulary.
Silindile Mbatha – Co-Teacher
Silindile Mbatha is a Co-Teacher at Kgololo Academy. Silindile was born and raised in Newcastle, Kwa Zulu Natal, where she attended elementary and middle school. She then moved to Joburg for her secondary schooling. Silindile is currently studying towards obtaining her Degree in Education at the University of South Africa.
Silindile enjoy playing tennis, watching movies and spending time with her two lovely daughters.
Sthembile Mahlaba – Grade 1 Lead Teacher
Sthembile is originally from Kwazulu Natal in Pietermarizburg. She studied a BA Degree majoring in Drama and performance studies and Media and cultural studies which she obtained from the University of KwaZulu Natal in the year 2015. In the year 2016, Sthembile studied a Postgraduate Certificate in education.Sthembile has a son named Nkanyezi who attend Grade R at Kgololo Academy. Sthembile’s biggest aspiration in life is to make a difference, she believes that if she is able to change one person’s life that would be her greatest achievement ever. Sthembile enjoys working Kgololo Academy due to her passion in teaching and she does not see herself doing anything else.
